Yogini heroines & Yogi heroes

Matsyendranātha, also known as Matsyendra, Macchindranāth, Mīnanātha and Minapa (early 10th century) was a saint and yogi in a number of Hindu traditions. He is considered as the revivalist of Hatha Yoga as well as the author of some of its earliest texts. He is also seen as the founder of the Natha Sampradaya, having received the teachings from Shiva.

Gorakhnath also known as Goraksanath (early 11th century) was a Hindu yogi, mahasiddha and saint who was the founder of the Nath Hindu monastic movement in India. He is considered as one of the two disciples of Matsyendranath.

Jalandharnath is known as a Mahasiddha yogi and direct disciple of Shiva. Some say he was Shiva himself (who entered into a dead body lying in the cemetery). In different traditions he is known under different names: Jalandharipa, Haddipa, Haddipad, Hallipad, Jalandarpad, etc.

Kanipanath is recognised as one of the nine Maha Yogis of the Shaivic Navnath Sampradaya and one of the most remarkable personalities amongst the Mahasiddhas of the Vajrayana Tantrik traditions of India and Tibet. He was a prominent Siddha yogi and at the same time a pandit (highly learned man).

Bharthari, the monarch-turned-ascetic is one of the favorite folklore heroes of North India. Stories of his renunciation abound in both literary and oral traditions from Punjab, to Maharashtra, to Bengal. According to the legend he was the uncle of Gopichand and the ruler of Ujjay.

The Nāth siddha Cauraṅgī began his life as a prince, the son of an old and temperamental king. He was named Pūran Bhagat, or, according to the Navanāth Bhaktisār, Krishanagar.

Adabanganath's story... Then Gorakhnāth whispered a mantra into Manik’s ear and by his grace removed all perception of duality from the lad’s mind. Manik saw the radiant unity at the heart of creation and perceived how its light radiates in everything, from bird to tree to human being. Gorakhnāth then took Manik to the mountains and taught him the whole of yoga. In recognition of his willful and stubborn nature, which had ultimately made him capable of becoming a Nāth, he was given the name Aḍabaṅganāth.

Revannāth was the son of Brahmā, the creator, and the River Revā, also known as Narmadā. The Narmadā flows from east to west through the modern states of Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat before entering the ocean at the Gulf of Khambat. She is the nourisher and sustainer of a vast region, home to millions.

Carpatinath. Also known through various legends as Siddh Charpatnath, Karpathi-nath, Pacharipa, and Charbaripa, the Natha Yogi Charpatnath is traditionally recognised as one amongst most distinguished Siddhas of the Natha Sampradaya. It is uncertain if his name is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘charpatha’, which can be translated either as ‘the ears lying flat to the head’, ‘the open palm of the hand or ‘chapati’ – ‘thin biscuit of flour’.

Gargi Vachaknavi was an ancient Indian sage and philosopher. In Vedic literature, she is honoured as a great natural philosopher. She participated in the brahmayajna, a philosophic debate organized by King Janaka of Videha and she challenged the sage Yajnavalkya with perplexing questions on the issue of atman.

Ananda Mayi Ma was an Indian saint, teacher, and mystic. Born in Nirmala Sundari (1896) and left her body in August 1882. She was revered as an incarnation of the Hindu goddess Durga and described as the most perfect flower the Indian soil has produced by Sivananda Saraswati.

Ubhay Bharati was an Indian female scholar and philosopher from the Mithila region in India during the 8th century CE. She was the wife of the Mimansa scholar Mandan Mishra. She served as the umpire for the philosophical debates between the two eminent scholars Mandana Mishra and Adi Shankaracharya.

Akka Mahadevi (1130–1160) was an early poet of Kannada literature and a prominent member of the Lingayat Shaiva sect in the 12th century.

Madālasā, an ancient queen married to King Kuvalayāsva, was a yogini and a highly spiritually accomplished person. She made her first three children into saints by singing them spiritual lullabies, while rocking them to sleep.

Meera, better known as Mirabai, and venerated as Sant Meerabai, was a 16th-century Hindu mystic poet and devotee of Krishna. She is a celebrated Bhakti saint.

Sulabha was a female scholar in the ancient Mithila Kingdom. She was a Vedic scholar and a learned woman who belonged to the mendicant order. She was well-versed in Yoga.

Vagambhrni was a woman seer mentioned in the Rigveda. Women seers were called Rishikas and Brahmavadinis.

Lalleshwari (1320–1392) also known as Lalla was a Kashmiri mystic of the Kashmir Shaivism school of Hindu philosophy. She was the creator of the style of mystic poetry called Vatsun or Vakhs, meaning speech.
